Lamp

I bought a new lamp shade from Tamara at Retro Print Revival. She made it to order. What a lovely girl. I have had two antique ceramic ones break so this one is great.

Edit - I just checked this out after I tried my first post via my phone and I realize this is not the best photo. I will try and take a better one. Also here is the link: http://retroprintrevival.com
One day I will learn how to make it look pretty!

zippers

I was all set today. I finished Mr N's cape and I was going to try sewing a zip. I have never tried it before. I watched a couple of you-tube tutorials first and decided I would make a little simple purse out of an old tie. Had it all organized.... No zipper foot! It has either been misplaced or I never had one in the first place. I have an old Husqvarna, I think 70s model. I have no idea how to go about searching for one. I have Googled it but no luck yet. I don't even know if they are made specifically for that model or if they are universal. Really, I am a novice. I can thread it, I can sew straight, zig zag and button holes and that's about it. I am determined to learn more, if only to teach my daughter.

Super Hero

Mr N has been enjoying being a super hero. Today he is spider man with the wings of Buzz Lightyear. I bought some red velvet and some material, red with silver stars. My plan is to make a reversible cape so he can choose to be a super hero or a wizard. Now the challenge for this very amateur sewer is to find some sort of pattern or make one up! I also have a few ideas for Christmas presents. I have heaps of material and zips and I was thinking of making little purses for my nieces. Only problem is I have never sewn a zip in before. Time to learn!! Have a nice day!!

Vegetables and backyards

A few photos from our backyard: (taken with the iphone)

I forgot to prune the roses last season so they have gone a bit crazy. Cut some back and put them in my Grandma's vase.

Our potato harvest, they grew from last year's planting

This was a mistaken shot but I sort of like it.

Pumpkins from seeds given to us by the kinder teacher.

Rainy Saturday

It's a lovely rainy Saturday. Miss E is busy painting. Mr N is watching ABC kids (yes, the TV should go off but it is such a lazy morning) I have a hundred things I could be doing but I am reading all the wonderful blogs I keep finding. Such a time waster but so interesting! It is raining so heavily outside, the roses are getting heavy and petals are dropping to the ground like confetti. Last night Miss E and I went to the Coburg Night Market. They had a few stalls and food. We had a quick look around, bought a few snacks, sat on the ground eating and watching people. As we were leaving the heavens opened and everyone got soaked. I loved it!! About time I did something. No photos this week. A bit boring?

Sunny days

It was a beautiful sunny day here today. I've had the back door open but because I have no fly screen door, just some beads, I have a plethora of blowies buzzing around driving me crazy....
Talking about driving me crazy, gee have I been a bit cranky in the evenings lately! I feel sorry for the poor kids. It mustn't be much fun! I have been home with them now for 5 1/2 yrs, 3 of those mostly by myself. I have never felt lonely in those 3 yrs. I have actually felt relieved. But now that they are getting older I am starting to realize that they need more than just cranky old me, that perhaps I need more than just cranky old me. Boy have they been going silly after dinner. It is getting harder to calm them down for sleep. The sillier they get, the crankier I get. It's not nice. Thank goodness for the nicer weather. They go outside and run their sillies out.
So, on that note I am taking the computer to bed to watch daggy old "Forsythe Saga" on iview. Goodnight!!

Making things...

One of my best friends just had her much waited for little boy yesterday. She is in another state so I am missing her. Decided to make something for her new little man. I got the idea from Here;
I was quite pleased with the result. I made the girl one first because yesterday I was convinced she was having a girl. But of course it was a boy. The colours represent her family's bomber devotion.
Now I am having trouble working out how to set the photos and text in the right place!! I know I'm not stupid but I really have trouble setting things on these posts sometimes. Practice I guess.

Anyway...

One of Miss E's frequent installations

Ever Since Miss E was tiny she has been setting up "installations" all over the place. In hindsight I wish I had taken photos. One when she was about 2 sat on the side table for weeks being added to. Bits of paper, toys, flowers. I wasn't allowed to touch them. She set this one up and took the photo herself. I must say, she has never seen an installation in her life. This one was quite complicated but you can't really tell in the photo.
Well the kids have gone off to the farm for the night. I'm doing night duty tonight. I should take something to do, although that will mean a busy night for sure!! I have enjoyed the wonderful weather today, especially getting the washing dry!!

Breast is best

I was just reading an article on the Herald Sun Website about women breast feeding each others babies. Here. (I'll try doing a link, my first time) A big hoo ha if you ask me. I looked after a young mum not long ago who had trouble getting her babe on the breast but it was quite a hungry little chicken. I came into the room at one stage and baby was settled. Oh, did she feed? Yes, my sister fed her she said. Great! Mum was tired and frustrated, unable to express more than a few drops, baby unsettled, well done Mum, for finding a solution. Sometimes I think people should just mind their own business. Same with breast feeding an older child. I tandem fed my 17 month old and new born. They both gave up the same week, when my daughter was 2 1/2 and son 15 month. I was disappointed that the little one was finished, but it was their own choice. With the 2 year old I had the policy of don't offer but don't refuse. She then went on to find a dummy (which I hated) Then after she gave it to the fairies at 3yo she took to sucking her thumb like her little brother. As I write my 5 and 4 yr olds are sitting watching tele, thumb in mouth. They'll stop when they're ready.
Good luck to all at the Melbourne cup today!! We're off to my Dad's for a BBQ lunch.
